Habana’s Experimental Graphic Workshop Classes
Learn engraving techniques by Cuban Master Printer
Habana’s Experimental Graphic Studio was created on July 30th 1962 with the goal of saving Cuba’s traditional 19th century lithography. This tradition was developed mainly by Habana’s Compañia Litográfica. Another of its aims is to conserve and develop engraving techniques. These goals led two of its founders, José Venturelli and Orlando Suárez to convince Cuba’s Industry Minister, at that time Ernesto Che Guevara, to back the project that endures over 50 years later. With the support of El Che a good number of lithographic stones and printing machines were recuperated. The Studio occupied a strategic location in Havana’s Cathedral Square and so was known at the time as “ The Studio in the square”. Years later, given the need to provide greater space to house the resident artists and to organise temporary exhibitions and a commercial gallery, the Studio moved to Callejón del Chorro, also in the Cathedral Square.
